Balzac, the Open Sky 11pm

E Steichen, 1908

Steichen's Image not only haunts but leaves this lasting impression on my mind. The statue of Balzac takes on this amazing presence. As though he has just flicked the cape aside, just lifted its nonchalant and proud head ever so slightly to peer down upon his prey. It is the light that creates this profound effect, the brightest light overall by his feet draws the eye, as it should, into the center. Then one is lead up to that ever so consuming stare.
